Field guide books and binoculars are necessary working tools for any birdwatching guide, but very difficult to get in Uganda, and often beyond the means of young trainees. In a joint decision with the UBGC, the Fund decided to provide each of the 2007 twenty-two trainees with the following set:

- One pair of Minolta Classic 8x40 rubber-coated binoculars.
- One copy of The Kingdon Pocket Guide to African Mammals by J. Kingdon.
- One copy of A Field Guide to the Birds of East Africa by T. Stevenson and J. Fanshawe.

(Both these books published by A&C Black (www.acblack.com), and in our oppinion the best titles available on their subjects).

These items were delivered on October 27 by the UBGC at a small ceremony held in Buhoma, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a place that represents the effort in protecting and preserving Uganda's natural heritage. The Deputy Chief Warden of Bwindi and the Army Lieutenant in charge of its military garrison acted as guests of honour. Some of the trainees could not make it to Bwindi, and the items were delivered to them later by other Club members.

From the beginning the project had the support of the Uganda Tourism Board (www.visituganda.com) and its Director, Mr. James Bahinguza. It is both the Emberiza Fund's and the UBGC's intention to continue working together in this project on an annual basis.

Harriet Kagimisha personifies the success for which this project is aimed: an exceptionally gifted and knowledgeable guide, she used to work at Kibale National Park, and now she has moved to the private sector, leading tours for two companies on a regular basis.
The Uganda Birdguides Club has elected Harriet Birdwatching Guide of the Year 2007.
